A delegation of SAARC cadets accompanied by Colonel YK Abeyrathna and several officers of the National Cadet Corps visited the Naval Headquarters in Colombo on 14th October 2011. Lieutenant Colonel Md. Zillur Rahman of Bangladesh, Colonel Jang Bahdur Singh of India, Captain Surendra Bhandari of Nepal and Lieutenant Colonel Wasim Talib Butt of Pakistan headed the respective SAARC contingents.
SAARC cadets are in Sri Lanka to show their solidarity with their Sri Lankan counterparts. They belong to SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) member countries of Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan.
Addressing the SAARC Cadet Delegation, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake emphasized the importance of discipline, dedication and commitment for them to take up future responsibilities in their careers. He stated that the knowledge they gain will help develop their future and character. Furthermore, they will be able to share the experience they have gained with others when they returned to their respective countries, the Commanded added.
A presentation on the history, role, naval ships and craft and naval operations was made to the visiting SAARC cadet delegation to give them a general understanding of SLN activities. An interactive session was followed allowing them the opportunity to ask questions on matters needing further clarification.
Several senior Naval Officers attached to the Naval Headquarters were also present on the occasion.
