ICC tackles visa & Ticket issues for W.Cup fans
The International Cricket Council on Friday said it was working to ease visa complications for overseas fans wishing to travel to the 2011 World Cup on the Indian sub-continent.

Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh who are co-hosting the flagship event have promised to speed-up and simplify the visa issuing process, ICC vice president Sharad Pawar told reporters in Colombo.

“With a valid ticket, the visa process for the matches will be made easier,” Pawar said after a meeting of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 central organising committee in Colombo.

The 14-nation showpiece event, held every four years, opens on February 19, 2011 with India taking on Bangladesh at the Mirpur stadium near Dhaka.

While Sri Lanka allows visa on arrival for foreign tourists for up to 30 days, tourists travelling to India need to apply in advance for a single-entry visa.

The ICC said the organising committee was working with the Indian government to allow multiple entry visas for all supporters with valid match tickets, except those from Pakistan.

Pakistan, the fourth Test-playing nation in South Asia, were removed as co-hosts due to security concerns in the volatile country.

The 43-day tournament will be played across 13 venues in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and ends with the final on April 2 at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium, which is under renovation.

ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said preparations were in full swing in all three countries to renovate and build new stadiums.

Tickets will go on sale in June and will be priced at between 50 US cents and around 50 dollars, officials said.

“Ticket prices will be kept as affordable as possible to allow younger fans to fill the stadium,” Lorgat said.

The other teams in the fray will be England, South Africa, the West Indies, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Canada, the Netherlands and Kenya.

“The government is working for making Digital Bangladesh as a “Nation Brand” to create positive image of Bangladesh abroad,” he said while speaking at a seminar on Developing a Positive Image of Bangladesh’ the first ever digital innovative fair at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theater here.

The budding politician, who became a primary member of the ruling Awami League last month, was speaking on Saturday at a seminar on ‘Developing A Positive Image of Bangladesh’, at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre, named after his grandfather, the country’s founding president who was assassinated in 1975.

Post-’75, it took Awami League 21 years to come to power again.

Sajeeb said the governments in that time were only concerned with keeping a hold on power, but building a positive image of Bangladesh was a priority for the present Awami League-led government.

“To build a positive image of the nation we need three things: stability, continuity and commitment,” he told the seminar, which also marked the end of a three-day Digital Innovation Fair in Dhaka.

“The present government with its slogan of ‘Digital Bangladesh’ is committed to take the advantages of digital technology to the door-steps of everyone,” Sajeeb added.

Answering questions in the seminar, he said the government would ensure better and cheaper internet bandwidth by this year.

Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar, of Dhaka University’s Institute of Business Administration, presented the keynote paper on ‘Branding Bangladesh’.

“Bangladesh is attaining growth and has lots of potential to become a popular destination for investment and tourism.”

Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology and Access to Information Programme of the Prime Minister’s office are jointly organising the fair.

The fair will remain open to public from 10:00am to 8:00pm daily up to Saturday.

President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion of the fair.

In his message, Zillur said the role of information and communication technology is of paramount importance in modern human civilisation.

“The present government, under the able and dynamic leadership of Hasina, has taken timely initiative to build an IT-based Digital Bangladesh by 2021,” the President said.

In her message, Hasina said the government has taken the programme to reach the services of ICT to the doorsteps of people to build a Digital Bangladesh by 2021.

“There is no scope to keep away from technology in present days. Technology will have to be used for the welfare of mankind and bringing dynamism and transparency in trade and commerce and administration,” she said.

BASIS SoftExpo- the annual mega exposition of the country’s software and Information Technology, is poised to become a major IT event of the South Asian region within a few years, organizers of the event said Saturday.

“The yearly expo has expanded its range and capacity over the decade and now attracting a number of participants from abroad regularly”, President of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) Habibullah N Karim said at a press conference in the city.

“Although, the main focus of this software exposition is the promotion of our homegrown companies to the local market, our aim is to turn it into a major regional IT event after hosting two or three more such occasions”, he added.

The remark came days before the upcoming BASIS SoftExpo 2010 which would take place in the city’s Bangabandhu International Conference Center from the next Wednesday (February 10).

.Speaking on the occasion, MA Mubin said they have given special emphasis on ‘Vision-2021′ aimed at supplementing the government’s efforts of turning Bangladesh into a digital country within the stipulated time.

Over 200 local and international companies with around five lakh visitors are expected to participate in the SOFTEXPO, he said adding that the event will create a wide scope for interaction among software providers, buyers, IT users, professionals, media, policy makers, development partners, students and the society people.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith is expected to inaugurate the event, the BASIS authority said, while Commerce Minister Faruk Khan and State Minister for Science and ICT Yeafesh Osman would also be present at the opening ceremony.

Highlighting the growth potential of software and ITES in Bangladesh, Habibullah Karim said, “The market size of the country’s software industry which is currently Tk. 10 billion is set to grow to almost Tk. 50 billion within the next three to four years”.

“At the same time, the export from software and ITES which is presently amounted to US$ 33 million, could reach US$ 500 million within five years”, he added.

This year’s SoftExpo would have special focus on attracting top level executives like chief executive officers, chief financial officers and chief technical officers from various local and multinational companies, the organizers said. The theme of the expo for this year is “Digital Bangladesh in Action”.

“IT and telecommunication industry is quintessentially integrated with each other as the mobile handsets have to use a range of software for their value added services and other applications”, said Mamun Hashmee, Additional General Manager of Grameenphone, platinum sponsor of the event.

“The market for cell phones’ value added services in Bangladesh currently amounts to Tk. 500 million, most of which is shared by the local software companies and it is poised to grow into Tk. 3 billion within five years”, he added.

M Rezaul Hasan, Chief Executive Officer of Reve System, the gold sponsor of the event and Mubin Khan, Director of BASIS also spoke on the occasion.

The price of the entry ticket for this year’s expo is Tk. 20.00. However, students will be able to enter the fair venue free of cost from 10 am to 5 pm and tickets can also be bought through mobile SMS from any Grameenphone number.

A total of 94 real estate companies and building material suppliers and three financial institutions will take part in the fair. Jamshed Hasan, convener of the fair and chairman of REHAB’s Chittagong chapter, read out a written statement at the conference.

A total of 637 REHAB members are now working to solve the housing problems in the country by building planned urban areas, considering the increasing population, he said.

Abdur Rahim Khan, REHAB vice president, Murad Iqbal Chowdhury, fair standing committee chairman, Jahid Hossain, press and media committee chairman, and Md Shamsul Alam, REHAB joint convener, were also present.
